Typhoid Fever: Clinical Experience and Evaluation of Drug Treatment.

A prospective study on 50 patients of culture proven typhoid fever was conducted. The most common symptoms seen in this series were insidious onset fever, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, headache, myalgia and bronchitic cough. Anaemia, relative bradycardia, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and abdominal tenderness were the common physical findings. G.I. haemorrhage, neuropsychiatric disorder and mouth ulcers were the complications seen. Splenic abscess (n=1) and temporary unilateral vocal cord paralysis (n=1) were the rare complications encountered. The clinical response to fluoroquinolones was 100% while it was 75% to chloramphenicol, 58.3% to Co-trimoxazol and 68.75% to amoxycillin.Downloads
