Abstract

Abstract

Background:  Hysterectomy is a major gynaecolo-gical procedure performed in Pakistan. The aim of this audit was to assess the standard of hysterectomy in Fatima memorial hospital, so as to improve the quality of patient care and outcome.

Methods:  This was a clinical audit and included all patients undergoing hysterectomy for benign gynaeco-logical conditions at initial assessment during the per-iod from 1st Januarv2011 to 31st December 2011 in all three gynae units of Fatima memorial hospital Lahore.

Results:  A total of 114 patients were included for analysis: 83.33% having abdominal hysterectomies, 2.63% having laparoscopic hysterectomies and 14.04% undergoing vaginal hysterectomies. Uterine fibroids constituted the commonest indication for abdominal hysterectomies, while the genital prolapse was the most common indication for vaginal hyste-rectomy. The overall incidence of complications for vaginal hysterectomy was lower than that for both abdominal hysterectomy and laparoscopic hysteric-tomy.

Conclusion:  Vaginal approach should be considered as first choice for uterus less than 12 weeks size, along with more vigorous training for this approach.

Keywords:  Abdominal hysterectomy, Vaginal hyste-rectomy, Laparoscopic hysterectomy.
