Abstract

A comparative diagnostic evaluation of bronchial washing, brushing and biopsy was carried out on 283 cases of clinically suspected bronchogenic carcinoma. The study period was from 1993-1997 Histology’ confirmed the diagnosis in 97 cases. Age of these patients ranged between 22-85 years. Male to female ratio was 3.8:1. Morphological evaluation revealed 67 (69.07%) cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 24 (27.74%), cases of small cell carcinoma and 4 (4.12 %) adenocarcinoma and 2 (2.06°/) of undifferentiated carcinoma. Diagnostic yield of combined biopsy, brushing and washing was higher compared to any one of those procedures evaluated singly.
