Management of Penetrating Liver Injuries

A two year study from October 1997 to September 1999 regarding the management of penetrating liver injuries was carried out at the West Surgical Ward of Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The study comprised of 35 patients. All the patients underwent exploratory laparotomy. 97% patients were male. 68.57 % of the total patients were in the age group between 13 to 30 years. 80 % patients had grade I to grade III injuries and 20% had grade IV and V injuries. 60 % of the patients underwent suture ligation and 2.86 % underwent hepatotomy and resectional debridement. Mortality in the study was 20 %. High incidence of mortality was seen in patients with multiple organ injuries and with grade W and V injuries.
